Eternal Seconds

for Anya

A smile so distant and yet so familiar
A gulf of a million miles separates us now
And yet in a moment short like a flash
A glimmer of familiar joy dances across your lips
You know me. You know so much about me.
You seem to know more about me than I ever told you.

Where is that girl that just the other day
Felt closer than the chamber of my inner heart
The other day when I still had you by my side
Lifting, dancing, joking with you like the good old days
Hour after hour, endless seemingly, at peace with the world.

The ice and snow has caught the world up North
And windy rain drizzles from a gray and tearful sky -
My soul is longing for your company and friendship
Yet you are far away in words, in voice in touch
Even while we sit across the same room.

And in a way, I do the same -
With walls to show as if nothing would touch
My unperturbed self…
But yes you know, those autumn storms
Bring memories of our recent warmth
When freezing winds chill body and my mind
Your picture of a better time bestows a warming smile.

You sat across the table twice
A flirt with eyes, a distance sought,
A falling back in looks, a struggle to escape,
Our minds touch, in humor and in common themes,
Attraction - is she mutual? Is it another dream?
Pulling our looks occasionally to each other
Staying a split second longer than an accident
Communicating in silence when in seconds
The world around us stops and we just feel
A rush of memories of not too long ago
When bodies, lips and words were one.

That echo is still there, I think.
I let you live the peace that you desire
And trying hard to give you what you need
At night I lay awake and say your name
In dreamless hours and
In dreams that search for you.
